All along the trail Aldo encouraged us and kept us going until we hit the campsite for lunch each day and the campsite each night. Everyone from Kusa Treks was amazing. Both our guys, Henri for the Sacred Valley and Felipe for the Machu Picchu trail where amazing. The drivers got us quickly and safely where we needed to be through Peruvian roads and traffic! The booking process itself was easy and everyone was available to answer questions. There were parts of the trail that were challenging and sometimes scary (dead woman's pass and walking down steep, sometimes slippery stairs) but these challenges were met with patience and encouragement by the team. We never felt rushed or like we were going too slow, which made the trip more enjoyable. Though the trail itself was challenging, every moment was worth it!
We also took part in the Cusco city tour and the Maras and Moray tours and had an amazing time touring Cusco with Kusa Treks by our side.
We have no regrets about booking with Kusa Treks and would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

The service and experience was impeccable. So far, this is the highlight of my Peruvian travels. Also, the beauty of the Andes doesn’t hurt. Erik, Kusa Trek’s owner, surprised us by meeting us at the airport for our transfer and gave us a great orientation and briefing on the city (we expected this pre-trek but most definitely not upon arrival to Cusco). He was very knowledgeable and accommodated a change in the usual itinerary (per our request) without batting an eye. We enjoyed our improv tour of the market and we loved learning about local products and customs. The following day we visited Moray and Moras with Edwar. Making lunch together with local women was a definite highlight! The next day we started our 3n/4d Lares and Inca Trail trek with Edwar as our guide. The Lares Trek, although challenging due to the altitude, was absolutely stunning and so worth it! Between the Lares Trek and Inca Trail we actually preferred the former. Kusa Trek’s support staff (Juancarlos, Angel, Francisco & Victor) were AMAZING, super efficient and kind. Juancarlos even surprised me with a cake on our last day together. Kusa Treks’ equipment was top-notch so don’t hesitate about renting directly from them. Supporting small & local was very important to us so choosing Kusa Treks (based on reviews and our initial impressions) was a no-brainer for us. We were very pleased with our choice.

Combining these two gave us the best of both worlds. The food that Chef Juan Carlos and Angel were able to cook while camping was amazing. Our entire trekking team made the experience great. More

The food was absolutely delicious at every meal as breakfast, lunch, and dinner were prepared by our chef, Fernando ,and our Sui Chef, Santos. They made every meal fun and engaging. They were really into it. Not one person in our group got sick! This was also great as we worried about this but the food was perfect. And we ate everything! Let me systematically give kudos:
Aldo, our city day tour guide. What a complete sweetheart, and extremely knowledgable! His warmth was palpable. So genuine, and a great introduction to the history and people of his culture.
Juan Carlos and Angel, the chefs for our trek. I am still floored over their talents and capabilities. Some of the best meals of my life, produced under camping conditions? Real stick to your ribs nourishment, that stays true to their culture. My mind is still boggled. They were so flexible with different meal preference, gracious. I also wanted to add that these two swooped in and helped me at one point, when I had a temporary moment of struggle at the end of the (Lares) trek, as we rounded a (very short) path chiseled into a steep cliffside. Quick disclaimer: I've never met anyone with a more acute fear of steep drop offs, than me. I'd say I'm in the top 1% as far as height phobias, so even though it bothered me, huge chances it wouldn't be a problem for most people.). These two circled back, offered to take my backpack and hold my hand. They even walked on the edge as I plastered myself across the wall (hey, I have no shame lol). They wanted to show me it was okay, and they were there to protect me. Even though we didn't speak the same language, their kindness and altruism spoke volumes. I will forever be grateful to these two men, especially, and hope that they know how much it meant. They are true gems for their company.
Francisco, the ever-smiling horseman. Such a positive, capable man, from the first to the last. He was the first team member we met on our way to the trailhead, and our trek guide told us that he "ALWAYS has a smile on his face." Absolutely true! He also was so kind in letting me pet his team of mules. We didn't speak the same language, but it wasn't needed.
I also like how these men offered up left overs to some of the remote villagers we came across on the trek, and the dogs. Their kindness was truly humbling. (On that note; if you are able to, to bring some toys/stickers etc for the children you will inevitably meet on the trail. They were so happy to receive these! Oh, and perhaps treats for the friendly dogs that seem to know the trek routine as well. I wish I could have taken them all home with me, including the team, lol).
If you book one of these treks, I hope you are fortunate enough to get these men I mentioned. Heck, request them, lol! I'm sure everyone Kusa Treks hires are more than capable, but I know these men are exceptional. They worked as an incredible team, making everything seamless, comfortable for our group. Every detail thought of with such ease and proficiency. We definitely felt pampered and looked out for. What a luxury, even when you are out in the elements, in the middle of nowhere, in a foreign country, lol! More
