Machu Picchu Train Options

The majority of trips to Machu Picchu begin and end in Cusco, Peru (city in the bottom right of the map).

To reach Machu Picchu you have the option to do a trek or do a tour by train, in either case you will take a train back to Cusco from Aguas Calientes (the town nearest to Machu Picchu).

For the return trip, there are two routes available:

  1. Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo, followed by a 2        hour drive by van to Cusco from the train station.
  2. Aguas Calientes to Poroy, followed by 30 minute            drive by van to Cusco from the train station.

You have three options for which class of train to take:

  1. Expedition Train (included in all of our prices)
  2. Vista Dome Train (Additional $70/person)
  3. Hiram Bingham Train (Additional $500+/person)

See more information on each option below.

Expedition Train

The Expedition train is considered the "normal" train. We include the price of this train in all of our trips.

The Expedition train has windows on the sides and smaller windows on the ceiling, which provide great views of the Sacred Valley on your way from Aguas Calientes to Cusco.

It has spacious seating, and food/drinks for sale (food is not included). Overall, this is a great option for people who want to keep costs down.

Vistadome Train

The Vistadome train is the most popular train upgrade.

This train has larger windows on the sides and ceiling and more spacious seating compared to the Expedition train. The larger windows provide exceptional views of the country side, farms, rivers and other sites you will pass as you travel through the Sacred Valley.

The Vistadome train also includes an in-trip meal along with entertainment. Additional drinks and snacks are available for purchase during the trip.

The entertainment provided includes traditional song and dance performed by local Peruvians along with a fashion show of beautiful clothes made in Peru.

This a great option for travelers who would like to enhance their overall travel experience.

Hiram Bingham Train

The Hiram Bingham train is a luxury train named after the explorer who discovered Machu Picchu. A journey on the Hiram Bingham train is luxurious from start to finish.

The train includes an observation car, a dining car, a bar car, first class service from start to finish and much more.

A visit to a once-in-a-lifetime place calls for a once-in-a-lifetime journey. Sink into an armchair in the 1920s-style carriages, where polished wood and brass catch the light.

A trip on the Hiram Bingham train includes: a welcome drink and dance, personalized gifts, lunch and gourmet dinner, all drinks (alcoholic and alcoholic), afternoon tea at the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge, restrooms on board, in-trip entertainment and more.
